The part nobody posts
You'll cross the line somewhere around one in the afternoon.
Then comes the bit that doesn't make the highlight reel: the shuffle to the bag drop, the food you can't face, the heat headache, the hour in a camp chair working out whether you can drive. Most athletes in this town on race weekend are staying in a hotel with a bathroom sink and a vending machine.
There is an air-conditioned room on that same street with a nurse in it.
We're at the finish on race day — from about 1 p.m. — and at our Evans clinic Monday morning, with two separate menus. Because what's appropriate for a registered athlete and what's appropriate for the person holding their bike pump are not the same thing.
Where you'll be sitting
Everyone else recovers in a parking lot.
You get a room built in 1886.
Late September in Georgia takes no interest in the fact that you have just covered 70.3 miles. And every other option within walking distance of that finish line is outdoors — a canopy on hot asphalt, a curb, or the back seat of somebody's car with the engine running for the air conditioning.
We're inside — the Augusta Cotton Exchange at 8th & Reynolds. You finish on Reynolds; we're on Reynolds, so there is no corner to turn. Red brick, green copper turret, impossible to miss. You walk in off the street, out of the sun, and sit down in a cool room while somebody else does the work.
About the room
Cotton was traded on this floor from 1886, when Augusta was one of the largest inland cotton markets in the world and some 400,000 bales moved through in an average year. The Exchange closed in 1964. The building has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, and there is still a chalkboard on the wall carrying prices somebody wrote up there in the early 1900s.
You'll have just done something most people never will. Sit down somewhere that's been standing for a hundred and forty years.

A real clinic that moved in for the weekend — not a folding table pretending to be a clinic.
Elevated Health is a physician-owned practice in Evans, ten minutes up the road. Every drip and every shot is given by a registered nurse, mixed the way we mix it every other week of the year, at the same prices we charge at the clinic. When the weekend is over we don't disappear — we're still there on Tuesday.
We screen everyone before anything goes in, and we say no when no is the right answer. If you're racing, we'll set you up with shots and pushes rather than a bag — that keeps you clear of the anti-doping volume limits without you needing to think about it.

Walk up, sleeves down
Walk in off the street and out of the heat. A registered nurse screens you, then you're in and out. You've already paid, so there's nothing to fumble for at the door — and if screening says no, you're refunded in full.
Race weekend

Race weekend runs on a schedule you won't want to renegotiate on Saturday night. Reserving takes a couple of minutes, and your card is what holds the window — 120 spots is all there is, and we'd rather sell out in August than turn people away at the door.
